Pronouns are not usually used in the Terran fashion unless the sentence would be ambiguous without them, or unless it is necessary to refer to a previous topic. However, they are often used to provide emphasis or focus attention on a particular noun. This usage is not common in Terran Standard but can be found in some other languages, such as French.
Pronouns are formed by taking the present-tense verb ending and adding -i, as follows:
Singular | Plural | ||
me: | osi | we: | osoyi |
you: | adi | you: | adoyi |
he: | uri | they: | uroyi |
The reflexive pronoun (e.g. "myself") is formed by adding -beh.
Certain noun modifiers can also be added. Here are a few of the more common ones:
ameliorative: | sa- |
pejorative: | yul- |
intensifier: | har- |
deintensifier: | sof- |
The ameliorative and pejorative prefixes can be used in a wide variety of situations, including in conversation with a superior or inferior officer.
An adjective can be formed out of a noun by adding -at instead of the standard declension suffix. Likewise, an adverb can be formed by adding -arut.
